Purus Perspective: October 2025

Investment Committee Update

As we head into the last quarter of 2025, your Purus Investment Committee continues to balance optimism about economic resilience with a healthy dose of realism about what lies ahead. The equity markets posted steady gains in September, a month that is traditionally soft, while bond markets showed stability after months of volatility.

The newest headline causing a stir is the U.S. federal government shutdown. As discussed in the article below, the shutdown’s direct effect on the economy and capital markets is usually minimal. One concern, however, is the timing of this shutdown; the Fed relies on key economic data to guide its policy decisions. As they prepare for the late October meeting, this “void of information” may cause some uncertainty. Last month the Fed cut rates by a quarter of a percent, a move that had been highly anticipated. We will have to wait and see if the “void of information” will affect the Fed’s decision for additional rate cuts later this year.

Continued attention to interest rate policy, global growth trends and consumer spending will be key as we head into the final stretch of the year. In this environment, maintaining a diversified, disciplined approach remains the best way to participate in upside opportunities while still keeping risk in check.

Government Shutdowns: More Drama Than Damage

‍First Trust
"It seems every few years, Washington flirts with a government shutdown, and once again investors are asking: should we worry? Headlines often frame shutdowns as economic calamities in the making, but history suggests otherwise. While the political drama grabs attention, past episodes have typically had only modest and temporary impacts on growth, markets, and government services."

Principles for Successful Long-Term Investing - 4Q25

‍J.P. Morgan
"Plan on living a long time and perhaps, saving and investing more. We are living longer - Life expectancies in the United States continue to increase as more people are living to older ages. For a 65-year-old couple, there is nearly an even chance that one of them will live to age 90 or beyond. Individuals should plan for living well beyond the average - to age 95 or even 100 - especially those in good health and with a family history of longevity."
